Jian Qiu's breast cancer journey: Why mammograms matter

By Jian Qiu, Director of Metrology, Cytiva

Did you know that every 14 seconds, someone somewhere in the world is diagnosed with breast cancer?

And that someone can be someone you know — maybe even someone you work with.

Hello, I am Jian Qiu, Director of Metrology in Bioprocessing at Cytiva.  Late in 2023, I had a regular mammogram and — to my surprise — was diagnosed with a stage 0 cancer known as ductal carcinoma in situ, or DCIS. Because of this early diagnosis, I was able to schedule surgery to address the situation and get the right treatment with minimal interruption to my work and personal life. I really appreciate the doctors and nurses for helping me get an early diagnosis and navigate my treatment to get back to normal.

After I shared my experience with other colleagues and friends, it prompted a couple of them to also get early breast cancer diagnoses through mammograms. Because they learned of their condition early, they were able to receive proper treatment and restore their health. I want to encourage all of you to get your annual check-ups and take care of your health so you, too, can detect any issues at very early stages.

I also want to ask you to please help support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) by making a donation through the 2024 Research Matters matching donation page. Your donation goes directly into the Aurora Fund — the largest active metastatic breast cancer research program — to make a real impact. From the eight years Cytiva has participated in this fundraising campaign with BCRF, we’ve enabled over 16 years of research!

If you’re unable to make a donation, please help us share this vital information with your family, friends and colleagues. In addition to supporting research through funding, we also aim to educate others on the importance of annual wellness check-ups. Outside of new treatments and technologies, early detection is our best ally in the successful treatment of breast cancer!
