Electrifying our fleet vehicles to reduce carbon emissions

By Wouter Janssen, Global Fleet & Travel Leader

The sustainability journey

We started our sustainability journey in 2020, when we created our plan for impact, our strategy. ’Designing in sustainability’ captures three opportunities for positive impact — for people, for our planet, and for our business — and it set priorities to deliver long-term value for stakeholders.

We have reached a pivotal moment in deciding our planet’s future. Every company has a duty to help tackle climate change. Our climate targets are designed to support society’s ambition to limit a global temperature rise to 1.50C (340F). Our shift to renewable electricity, smart purchasing decisions, and alternative transport have allowed us to reduce our CO2e emissions by 12%, since our 2019 baseline.

Electrifying our fleet

We took the initiative to identify opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint by starting to convert our global fleet of 1900 vehicles to electric vehicles—our green fleet. In 2022, 70% of our fleet consists of traditional combustion engines and only 20% for hybrinds and electric vehicles. In the chart below you can see how we intend to evolve our fleet by fuel type and help meet our sustainability goals.

We built a green fleet program from scratch and set a goal of electrifying our fleet to 50% by 2025 and to 100% by 2030. Two years later, one in three cars in Europe is now electric, Here’s how:

  • Created a centralized function team steered by regions
  • Developed and standardized new processes and policies
  • Evaluated suppliers and vehicles consolidate volume purchasing power
  • Optimized total cost of ownership where possible
  • Utilized each country’s readiness index to steer which markets we converted first, and staggered the remaining global rollout as those markets mature
  • Established financial incentives for EV adoption for associates while also communicating environmental benefits

To accomplish this shift, we learned about country-specific regulations and our own data inaccuracies, the need to continually balance cost versus sustainability considerations, and how there is still psychological resistance to change.

Your future is our future

We navigated through challenges to enhance our sustainability profile. Next up it to improve our data analysis and reporting, install more workplace EV charging stations at our sites, and define how we help our associates who aren’t driving fleet vehicles, and reduce their tailpipe emissions. We look forward to sharing our future progress with you. We hope that you’ll come along with us on this journey.
