Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a critical component of comprehensive patient care. Implementing EBP can lead to improved patient outcomes and safety, staff satisfaction, and cost savings for the facility per the Fuld Institute for EBP.
Here at Cytiva, there is an established team of clinical specialists consisting of registered nurses with a wide background of nursing expertise. These nurses understand the importance of EBP and have completed the Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice in Healthcare course from Ohio State University.
We prepared potential EBP-based projects for healthcare facilities to implement. Our team first identifies the question raised by the healthcare facility – i.e. “In pediatric patients hospitalized in the PICU, how does use of an endotoxin retentive IV in-line filter , compared to no filter, affect length of stay in the PICU?” Next, the team completes a literature review of relevant studies to gather evidence on the topic. Lastly, they summarize the information and recommendations.
Dr. Denise Abdoo is one of the recipients of the Magnet Nurse of the year award.
We were fortunate to attend the 2021 American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Conference to present these proposed projects to nurses from all over the US. At the conference this year, we were thrilled to sponsor the Magnet Nurse of the Year Award. The recipient, Dr. Denise Abdoo from the Children’s Hospital of Colorado, was recognized for her outstanding work as a mentor in the field of child abuse prevention.
EBP is pertinent at this conference because, “to maintain Magnet status, hospitals must show improved outcomes and clinical practice based on current evidence” (1). It is expected that nursing excellence is displayed within all Magnet facilities. One way to do so is to continually evaluate your nursing practice and employ evidence-based change wherever possible.
