How Cytiva is tackling climate change

By Cytiva

Climate change is the #1 threat to our global future

2024 could be the first year where we temporarily breach the 1.5°C global warming target set at the 2015 Paris agreement. To limit global warming to less than 1.5°C long term, the UN concludes that global greenhouse gas emissions must peak before 2025 and decline 43% by 2030. So, as many of us already see the impact of this temperature rise through a greater frequency of extreme weather, it is clear why countries, companies and individuals must reduce their carbon emissions.

Danaher, our parent company, has committed to setting Science Based Targets (SBT), Net Zero greenhouse gas UN concludes that the global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions must peak emission reduction targets which translates to a 90% absolute reduction of carbon emissions by 2050 without using offsets. This means targeting not only Scope 1 and 2 emission reductions, but also Scope 3 emissions that we don’t directly control. Scope 3 emissons include purchased products and services and emissions from shipping product to customers. They account for 95% of our emissions so our committment requires collaboration and equal ambitions across the entire value chain

“We can’t achieve our sustainability promises alone. By collaborating with customers and suppliers across our industry ecosystem, we can better understand and manage impacts and partner with like-minded organizations.” Emmanuel Abate, Head of Sustainability.

Cytiva is hyperfocused on reducing our carbon emissions in three crucial areas: our products, our sites, and our supply chain.

  1. We are building out product data, embedding eco-design in our processes, and investing in new technologies to help us design products with lower environmental impacts and carbon footprints.
  2. At our sites and facilities, we are improving operational efficiencies by using continuous improvement kaizen toolkits for efficiency, converting fleet vehicles to electric vehicles, and increasing renewable energy. We have reduced Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 33% since 2019 and 89% of our manufacturing sites are now fully powered by renewable electricity.
  3. And lastly, our responsible sourcing program helps guide us to invest in high performing suppliers – this is based on EcoVadis assessments that score a company’s environmental, social, and governance capabilities. We have over 1000 suppliers that have completed their EcoVadis assessment. Sharing EcoVadis ratings with us allows us to move a larger portion of our resources to suppliers with higher scores, resulting in a milestone of $1 billion in net green spend achieved.

Our suppliers’ carbon emissions are our emissions. Our carbon emissions are our customers’ emissions. Together, we can address climate change and make a meaningful impact for you, the environment, our business, and our industry.
