Genomics

Genomics is the area of molecular biology focused on the structure, function, evolution and mapping of genomes. Genomics strives to understand the role and function of the genome and perform genetic mapping to further understand the causes of various diseases.

Genetics is the study of a specific gene within an organism, whereas genomics is the study of all of the genes within an organism (the genome).

Molecular biology is the study of the composition, structure and interactions of cellular molecules. It includes nucleic acids and proteins which carry out biological processes essential for cell function and maintenance.

A Genome is the content of DNA present within a single cell of an organism.

Genome sequencing, or whole genome sequencing (WGS), is the process of determining the complete DNA sequence of an organism's genome at a single time. WGS helps us understand both the molecular basis of physiological processes as well as the development of therapies for treating a range of human diseases.
