- Cytiva expanding Massachusetts manufacturing footprint with new facility

Cytiva, a global life sciences leader, will open its new 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts by the end of 2020. Construction is well underway at the new site, which is part of Cytiva’s five-year, $500 million investment to expand its global manufacturing capacity to respond to growing demand and new market opportunities.
Mary Blenn, Vice President, Global Supply Chain, Cytiva, says: “The world needs advanced therapeutics and vaccines now more than ever. With three sites in Massachusetts, we will be better able to respond to the immediate needs of our customers, while becoming an employer of choice in the state.”
Cytiva has a global manufacturing and distribution network that spans North America, South America, Europe, and Asia. The Shrewsbury facility will significantly increase Cytiva’s capacity to manufacture Xcellerex Bioreactors and will free up capacity in its Westborough facility to manufacture complementary single-use technologies. The new facility will have five manufacturing lines operating 24/7, a new clean room and a research and development lab. The Massachusetts expansion is part of Cytiva’s security of supply initiative to help ensure business continuity.
Xcellerex Bioreactors provide the flexible and scalable solutions drug developers need to manufacture biopharmaceuticals, vaccines and antibodies in both cGMP (good manufacturing practice) and non-cGMP environments.
In addition to making significant capital investments, Cytiva is also investing in talent. Over the coming months, Cytiva plans to hire approximately 200 Massachusetts based associates to help Cytiva respond to the extraordinary demand for its technologies and solutions.

The COVID-19 pandemic is increasing short-term demand across the life sciences industry, however, the biotherapeutics industry was predicted to experience double digit growth year-on-year between now and 2025 . In 2019, more than 75 percent of the biological therapies approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration relied on Cytiva’s technologies for manufacturing.
