Sustainability is cornerstone of Cytiva’s building practices

By Cytiva

New Signy Science Park opens: the first Cytiva facility built using our new Sustainable Building Practices. It was constructed to meet Switzerland’s platinum energy efficiency standard, Minergie 2020.

We made the promise to use energy efficiently, to shift to renewable energy, and cut CO2 emissions, even as Cytiva’s business grows. We’re putting our money where our mouth is.

In July 2021, Cytiva and Pall announced a $1.5B investment in infrastructure to meet growing customer demand. This followed Cytiva’s announcement in 2020 to spend $500M for building capacity.

High standards

To reinforce our sustainability commitment as we grow, Cytiva also introduced the sustainable building practices guide in 2022, which is a blueprint for resource and energy-efficiency practices to be applied in all new and renovated facilities.

The guide aligns to the intention of the Net-Zero Standard to consume only as much energy as is produced through onsite renewable sources or via sources validated as deriving from renewable energy. The guide includes key performance indicators (KPIs) that track energy and water use, landfill waste, and greenhouse gas emissions. The KPIs help us track our goals to achieve a balance between long-term water availability and demand and to eliminate waste sent to landfill and incineration.

According to Mary Blenn, VP of Global Supply Chain, “Cytiva’s sites are on a journey to reach net zero. This guide is a blueprint to embed sustainable practices into all our facilities. That way, we can demonstrate our shared purpose to reduce our carbon footprint with our local communities and customers.”

Global reach

The investment announced in 2021 covers expansion at 13 Cytiva and Pall Corporation sites around the world and construction of new sites in the US and UK to establish regional manufacturing models.

In 2022, we will open the first of our facilities in line with the guide - a new cell and gene therapy manufacturing site and Center of Excellence in Signy Science Park, Switzerland. All energy will come from renewable sources — the vast majority of which will come from onsite solar panels capabilities. And we’ll use thermal energy to heat and cool offices.
