ÄKTA start™ can be operated using the touchscreen display or from a computer connected to the instrument using UNICORN™ start. UNICORN™ start provides additional options for designing, running, and analyzing experiments.
Standard components
There are 10 modules placed on the wet side of system, interconnected by tubing and function to deliver the liquid through the system flow path and divert the flow as required, and to monitor UV absorbance and conductivity of the liquids.

While ÄKTA start™ can function as a stand-alone system controlled from the touch screen, UNICORN™ start control software optimizes operational efficiency with four different modules: System Control, Method Editor, Evaluation, and Administration.
Optional fraction collector: Frac30
The ÄKTA start™ can be equipped with the Frac30 fraction collector, which offers the following features:
- Capacity: Allows collection of up to 30 fractions.
- Tube sizes: Supports four tube sizes, ranging from 1.5 to 15 ml.
- Collection volumes: Fractions can be automatically collected in volumes ranging from 0.5 to 15 ml.
