X-Release | X is incremented whenever a major new functionality has been added to the software product. A major functionality is defined by the importance of the change it provides to the customer, such as a group of functions for a new application, or a new deployment capability. X-releases may include minor changes and defect correction too. |
Y-Release | Y is incremented whenever minor changes have been implemented to the software product. Minor changes can be new minor functional additions, the modification of an existing function, or a change in the specification (e.g. support for a new version of the operating system). Y-releases may include defect correction too. |
Z-Release | Z is incremented whenever changes have been implemented to the software product without modifying its functionality or specification. It is typically reserved for defect corrections. |
